What can we learn from 23 years of grantmaking in Mexico? How can we make the findings truly useful?

Representatives of Mexican civil society organizations discussing equitable partnerships between national and sub-national organizations at a workshop in 2018
  1. First, we want to document and share the story of our support to Mexican organizations over the past 23 years. How did the Hewlett Foundation first become involved in supporting Mexican organizations? How has the socio-political context evolved, and how has the work of grantee organizations evolved with it? What contribution was made toward social change?
  2. Second, what can we learn from the implementation of our current Transparency, Participation & Accountability (TPA) strategy in Mexico over the past five years? What have we learned, for instance, from our efforts to facilitate peer learning with African organizations, or partnerships between Mexican feminist organizations and governance-focused organizations?
  3. Finally, we aim for the retrospective to inform the next version of our TPA strategy. We will launch the strategy refresh process in the next few months and aim to finalize the next strategy in the latter half of 2021.
  • We seek diverse views and voices, including critics, to better understand the effects of our work in Mexico from multiple perspectives. We will engage with current and past grantees while also hearing from new voices that will push us to think differently.
  • We’re mindful that evaluations commissioned by foundations are rarely useful for the organizations we support. We aim to be open, transparent, and participatory. We invite your input on the questions that we ask and the sources we consult. You can expect to hear from us regularly through blog posts and other formats, and we hope that you participate with your ideas throughout the process.
  • We strive for collaboration based on mutual respect. We will build in the necessary time for inclusivity, recognizing the constraints placed by COVID-19, especially on women and care givers. We recognize that we are one of many private foundations that support Mexico’s pluralistic civil society and we strive to coordinate with peer funders to avoid any repetitive surveys or workshops.
